Meet Miss P – Female Ranger at Great Plains

Miss P is a Female Ranger working in the Okavango Delta in Botswana

Why did you become a Wildlife Ranger?

My name is Pihelo, known to everyone as ‘Miss P’ from Kauxwi Village in Botswana. I became a ranger because I wanted to play an important role of not only to protect the wildlife but also to expand the natural habitats.

What are the most important parts of your job?

Most important parts of my job is to do patrols in the protected areas, monitor wildlife and biodiversity, prevent poaching, engage local communities, and resolve human-wildlife conflicts. I record sightings of the different species we see along with the signs of animals.

What did you do before becoming a ranger?

Before I became a ranger I was engaged on temporary jobs that lasted only for some few months but all thanks to Great plains Foundation for securing this job for me that will help me assist my family financially.

Are there woman and girls in your community that have seen what you do, and inspire to also become a ranger?

Most women at my community admire my job a lot and some girls see me as their role model. Their dreams is to see themselves as Rangers once they grow up.

How does your family/community feel about your work?

My family together with the community back in the days had a conflict between them and the wildlife and ever since I became a ranger they have changed their mindset on how to live with these animals as I’ve educated them about conserving the natural habitats. I have a 5 year old daughterwho admires my job a lot, especially when seeing me driving a cruiser and wearing my uniform.. I’m really committed to my job of being a ranger.

What challenges have you faced as a female ranger?

The challenges are that I spend most of the time away from my family, but we overcome these challenges by going through training to ensure we are mentally tough, physical fitness and moral character and motivation.
