We recently partnered with The Guardian Project in

We recently partnered with The Guardian Project in Kenya to help strengthen food security and support livelihoods in the Shompole community by establishing small-scale poultry businesses. Forty community members were selected to receive chickens and training to launch their own poultry micro-enterprise and, importantly, each farmer also committed to paying it forward by donating chickens to future farmers to help grow the initiative.

Participants have already begun selling eggs and chickens to buy school supplies, pay school fees, and support their households. And the journey continues. In April 2026, the new farmers will pay it forward again — expanding the programme to even more families in Shompole and Lenkobei villages.

A simple idea, a shared commitment, and a future where communities thrive together.

This year’s World Food Day theme, “Hand in hand for better food and a better future,” underscores the urgent need for collaboration in addressing global food challenges. In a time marked by climate pressures, conflict, and economic instability, it calls for governments, farmers, businesses, and communities to unite in building food systems that are resilient, nutritious, and sustainable.

Across Africa, the impacts are evident. Extreme weather events and shifting climate patterns have disrupted crop yields, altered planting and harvest cycles, and increased vulnerability for families. While long-term solutions are essential, immediate action is equally vital.

Through our School Food Programme in Kenya, we are ensuring that over 14,000 children continue to receive daily nutritious meals and the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive, even in the face of adversity.

The loss of Dr Jane Goodall is massive for the conservation community, but we take solace in the knowledge that her legacy will live on through her groundbreaking research and the countless people she has inspired.

At the Great Plains Foundation, we recognise Jane as not only a conservation icon but also a beacon of inspiration for generations. Her unwavering commitment to improving the lives of animals and preserving our planet has left an indelible mark on the world. Jane’s curiosity, compassion, and courage reshaped humanity’s understanding of animals, the delicate balance of nature, and our own responsibility to it.

Dereck and Beverly Joubert, co-founders of the Great Plains Foundation, were fortunate to have engaged with her personally, experiencing her sharp wit, immeasurable strength, and unwavering optimism for the future of our planet.

Jane's legacy is huge, and we will continue to honour her work in the conservation space.

Thank you, Jane, for your friendship, your courage, and your belief in the possibility of a better world. You will be deeply missed, but your spirit and legacy will forever guide us.

Earlier this month, a pack of painted dogs in Zimb

Earlier this month, a pack of painted dogs in Zimbabwe was relocated under our Project Rewild initiative, led by @DereckJoubert and @BeverlyJoubert. What began as a mission to move the dogs quickly turned into a story of resilience, complete with the birth of puppies mid-operation. Today, they’re free in a protected area, learning to hunt again, strengthening fragile bloodlines, and shaping a hopeful future for their species. This challenging task was only possible thanks to the dedication of the many conservation partners and teams involved.

On September 20th, our ranger teams in Zimbabwe and Botswana laced up for the Wildlife Ranger Challenge 21km race, running in full kit with fully loaded packs. Alongside 170 teams across Africa, they showed the endurance and determination it takes to protect wildlife every single day.

Team spirit in action. The Great Plains family in Johannesburg, South Africa recently laced up their running shoes for a 5km jog to support our rangers taking on the 21km Wildlife Ranger Challenge. This continent-wide campaign unites over 170 ranger teams across Africa, raising vital funds for ranger welfare, training, insurance, and equipment.
