We at Great Plains believe our conservation legacy is inextricably linked to communities living among the wildlife and land we protect. For this reason, we are investing in the next generation of conservationists through conservation education and Great Plains Conservation Camps.
The camps supplement the formal education of students who live in and around Great Plains’ areas of operation with a conservation intensive curriculum and field studies. Local students learn about the uniqueness of their ecosystems and the importance of being good stewards of the land and animals.
Drawing upon the resources of the Great Plains camps in Botswana and Kenya guides and staff donate their knowledge, experience, and time, becoming conservation mentors to the students.
Started in 2011 in Botswana, our most recent Botswana Conservation Camp was held at Selinda Explorers Camp, hosting students from the Gudigwa Primary School’s Wildlife Club. Just last week our first Conservation Camp in Kenya was held in the Masai Mara. Working with our partners the Maa Trust, students from communities around Mara Plains and Mara Expedition Camp participated in a range of conservation related activities during their school holiday. We believe the more we can instill a sense of wonder and appreciation for the land, the brighter the future for Africa’s wild places.
