SCHOOL FOOD PROGRAM

Sponsored nutritious meals to boost attendance and performance

The School Food Program started in 2022 as an emergency relief to a drought in the southern regions of Kenya, which face high rates of malnutrition. The local community reached out with concerns about dwindling school attendance due to the lack of food. The teachers also raised concerns that those who did attend had struggling attention spans. The Great Plains Foundation specialises in understanding hurdles to education and reacting quickly to reduce these hurdles, as education is the basis of a thriving region.

Hunger is a significant barrier to learning, with hungry children being often distracted and unable to focus, disrupting the rest of the class and their own personal progress. By distributing nourishing meals to schools in rural Kenya, the students have better focus, attention and progress. Through the Great Plains School Food Program, we are giving the enthusiastic next generation a better chance. Proper nutrition is essential for brain development, particularly for memory, attention and problem-solving skills. Well-nourished children also show a good balance throughout the day of sustained energy levels. They can take part in extra-curricular activities such as sports, where other life lessons such as teamwork, are taught.

$50 a month sponsors 455 nutritious school meals.
