Last year, as part of Project Rewild, 17 painted dogs – eight adults and nine pups – were successfully relocated into Zimbabwe's Sapi Reserve, marking a major milestone in rebuilding predator diversity and strengthening this endangered species’ future. What began as a complex conservation operation took unexpected turns, including the birth of pups mid-mission, and demanded extraordinary dedication from a committed conservation team.

Today, these painted dogs are running free in a protected landscape, learning to hunt, exploring new territory, and helping restore ecological balance in the region. Early monitoring shows encouraging signs of stability, with the pack ranging from Sapi Reserve to Chewore North along the Zambezi River.

Building stronger teams on the front line of conservation.

This quarter marked meaningful progress in the development of our Wildlife Rangers across Botswana and Zimbabwe, from advanced 4x4 defensive driving training in the Okavango Delta, to well-earned promotions into leadership roles. Five rangers stepped up as Team Leaders, including two women, strengthening our field teams and setting new standards of professionalism and dedication. Our rangers also took on the African-wide Wildlife Ranger Challenge, pushing their physical and mental limits in a 21km run carrying weighted packs – a powerful demonstration of endurance, unity, and commitment to protecting wildlife and wild spaces.

Protecting ecosystems takes vigilance, collaboration, and boots on the ground.

Across Botswana and Zimbabwe, Great Plains Wildlife Rangers are monitoring biodiversity, mitigating illegal activity, and responding to emerging threats. Joint patrols with partner organisations and government departments, by helicopter, vehicle, and boat, are proving highly effective, leading to arrests, the recovery of illegal fishing equipment, and the disruption of poaching activity.

Beyond enforcement, rangers are deepening our understanding of the natural world. From elephant monitoring and investigating wildlife mortalities, to recording bird sightings that help map species distributions and seasonal movements, every patrol contributes vital data to conservation efforts.

Earlier this year, a pack of painted dogs were translocated and successfully released into Zimbabwe's Sapi Reserve as part of Project Rewild, led by Great Plains cofounders @DereckJoubert and @BeverlyJoubert. What began as a complex relocation became an extraordinary journey, complete with unexpected puppy births and unwavering dedication from a passionate conservation team. Today, these dogs are running free, learning to hunt, strengthening fragile bloodlines and reclaiming their place in the wild.

While visiting the Olare Motorogi Conservancy, Beverly Joubert spent time with Warden Francis Sopa, who shared this deeply meaningful gesture: a handcrafted necklace, gifted as a thank-you from himself and his wife. In return, Dereck wears a traditional cloak made by Francis’s wife — a symbol of appreciation, partnership, and shared purpose.

These moments matter because they reflect the relationships behind conservation success. Through the support of the Great Plains Foundation, new and improved ranger housing has been completed at the Olare Motorogi Conservancy headquarters — a transformative project that places dignity, wellbeing, and sustainability at its heart.

The development includes a modern twelve-unit residential complex, a well-equipped kitchen and dining hall, and new washroom facilities — all thoughtfully designed to support community living while minimising environmental impact. Most importantly, it marks a significant step forward in improving the welfare and working conditions of the rangers who protect this remarkable ecosystem every day.

True conservation is built not only on protecting landscapes and wildlife, but on standing alongside the people who safeguard them.

On 3 December, Great Plains Foundation proudly han

On 3 December, Great Plains Foundation proudly handed over two new sustainable home in Gudigwa and Seronga as part of our Sustainability Housing Project in partnership with Okavango Community Trust communities. These homes are built using recycled glass bottles from @great plains conservation camps and local partners, crushed into sand and transformed into strong, eco-friendly bricks.

A huge thank you to Hon. Wynter Mmolotsi, Kgosi Ndando, Kgosi Ndowe, the VET Committee, the District Commissioner and Councillors, district officials, and the Seronga and Gudigwa communities for joining us in celebrating this milestone. Together, we’re building brighter futures, one home at a time.
