In 2015, Southern Africa was losing a rhino to poachers every 6.3 hours, with deaths outpacing births. In response, Great Plains and &Beyond launched Rhinos Without Borders, relocating rhinos from South Africa’s poaching hotspots to safe havens in Botswana. Between 2015 and 2019 this emergency response translocated a total of 87 rhinos and today a new generation of rhinos is living wild in Botswana. As a result of this success, in Botswana, the project has transitioned its focus to monitoring and protection via a team of dedicated rangers who protect the rhinos with a fierce energy and commitment to ensuring their safety and well-being. Beyond Botswana’s borders, Great Plains Foundation remains focused on protecting wild rhinos and restoring and expanding populations through translocations and rewilding to suitable, secure habitats. Working in collaboration with local and national conservation partners, we will continue to support rhino conservation and rewilding across the continent.
Join us today in helping protect future generations of wild rhinos. All gifts have a major impact. Gifts of $25,000 or more have the opportunity to personally name a rhino calf.
