Lions in Africa occupy just 5% of their former range, white rhino numbers on the continent have plummeted by 12% in the last decade, and pangolins remain one of the most trafficked mammals in the world. Empowering and uplifting communities is a vital component in our quest for sustainable conservation. We recently established our first all-female anti-poaching unit in Botswana through the hiring and training of seven women from communities surrounding the Okavango. Our goal is to increase female employment and empowerment and create conservation leaders who will inspire younger generations.⁣

The year is off to a good start! As travel restric

The year is off to a good start! As travel restrictions continue to be lifted across the African continent, a steady flow of revenue from tourism has returned providing critical funding for our Foundation projects. New community initiatives set up in remote areas of Kenya and Botswana have seen a pioneering impact in education, women's empowerment and wildlife conservation. Our existing projects continue, such as Solar Mamas, Conservation Roots, Project Ranger and Rhinos Without Borders. Under the Green Heart of Great Plains' vision, we continue to be innovative and break boundaries in waste management and sustainability.⁣

Great Plains cofounders @DereckJoubert and @BeverlyJoubert have spent their lives dedicated to conserving Africa's wild species and spaces – a challenge that has often taken them to remote locations in difficult circumstances. They were recently honoured for their efforts at a ceremony in New York where they were awarded the Explorers Club Medal, an accolade that recognises extraordinary contributions directly in the field of exploration, scientific research, or to the welfare of humanity. It's considered the "Academy Award" of exploration and is richly deserved.⁣⁣

We're on a mission to repopulate the northern outskirts of Kenya's Maasai Mara National Park with a species of evergreen tree that has come under threat from land-use changes and unsustainable harvesting. And we could use a little help. Our #GreenheartTree project — which forms part of our #ConservationRoots initiative — has been shortlisted to receive funding from @eocaconservation. Greenheart trees are an indigenous species of evergreen that are strong and highly sought after for timber, firewood and medicinal purposes and widely collected by traditional healers. In the wild they provide shade for countless species, protection against soil erosion during floods, and food for keystone animals like elephants. We aim to propagate 10,000 Kenya Greenheart trees in our nursery, half of which will be planted in eroded areas, while the other half will be distributed to traditional healers or community projects.⁣

Education is a critical component in conservation

Education is a critical component in conservation and oftentimes gaining a better understanding of wild species and their importance in healthy ecosystems goes a long way towards changing attitudes and improving relationships with the natural world. Snakes are widely feared and misunderstood, which is why it's essential that children are made aware of why these animals should be conserved not killed. Thank you to the @themaatrust and the Bio-Ken Snake Farm in Kenya for helping educate and inspire children as part of the Great Plains "Conservation Holiday Club".⁣⁣

At Great Plains we firmly believe that in order to achieve truly sustainable conservation solutions it's vital that we build bridges (sometimes literally) with the communities who depend on wild spaces and species for their livelihoods. We recently funded an upgrade to a bridge over the Olare Orok River in the Olare Motorogi Conservancy which ensures that the Maasai community who live in the area are able to safely reach food markets, shops and medical support if needed. ⁣

The recent opening of the bridge was met with some excitement from school children who can now safely navigate the river crossing.⁣
⁣

Millions of people living in the developing world

Millions of people living in the developing world have little or no access to eyeglasses and face challenges as a result of poor eyesight. For those still in school, these difficulties can affect their ability to succeed and is unlikely to change as many people in rural communities are rarely able to get to eye clinics for assessments and treatments.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Our partnership with @4x4Outfar in Botswana aims to fix this. By offering a mobile eyesight screening service and eyeglasses we hope to bring better vision to future generations. The 4x4OutFar mobile clinic also offers training to communities so the support can continue sustainably even after the team have moved on.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Last week, the Mobile Eye Clinic team moved through the five communities living on the fringes of the Okavango Delta in Botswana that Great Plains works closely with (Seronga, Gunotsoga, Eretsha, Beetsa and Gudigwa), screening children between the ages of 10 and 14 years old. They managed to screen 1,200 school pupils and provided those in need with eyeglasses.⁣⁣
